“Go On” brings Matthew Perry back to NBC for the first time in five-plus years, and while the new show is an ensemble piece too, it’s pretty far removed from “Friends.”

Perry plays Ryan King, a glib sports-radio host who’s been avoiding dealing with his wife’s death in a car accident. He reluctantly starts attending group therapy sessions, and then starts taking them over from not-necessarily-qualified group leader Lauren (Laura Benanti, who was hands down the best thing about “The Playboy Club” this season).

The show’s cast also includes Allison Miller (“Terra Nova”), Tyler James Williams (“Everybody Hates Chris”), Julie White (“Transformers”), Bill Cobbs, Suzy Nakamura and Khary Payton. You’ll glimpse John Cho in the trailer too, but he’s not listed as a series regular. “Friends” writer-producer Scott Silveri created “Go On,” which will air on Tuesdays in the fall.

Matthew Perry is coming home.

At the network upfronts in NYC, the star of NBC’s new fall comedy Go On told us that it feels “oddly familiar” after his years on the network’s hit sitcom Friends.

He’s also feeling…purple?!

Read on to find out what he means—as well as why he’s “kind of glad” his ABC comedy Mr. Sunshine didn’t succeed and whether he agrees with former costars Lisa Kudrow and Matt LeBlanc that a Friends reunion is “never going to happen.”

“I always like to think of myself as being the purple feather” in the NBC Peacock, Perry deadpanned when we asked about his homecoming.

He definitely deserves a feather in his cap after 10 seasons playing Chandler Bing on one of the network’s most successful series.

Unfortunately, his last two TV outings, Studio 60 and Mr. Sunshine, didn’t, um, go on as long. But, he told us candidly, “I was kind of glad Sunshine didn’t go as long…I was in charge of that show. Now I’m just an actor again and it’s nice.”

Go On “is about a guy named Ryan King who looks a lot like me,” Perry joked. “He is a sportscaster who loses his wife in tragic way and is forced to go to group therapy, where there’s a bunch of kooky characters…Zany hilariousness ensues.” As for more zaniness to come from the Friends gang, Perry calls his costars’ comments “probably a fair assessment.” But he didn’t completely shoot it down, saying his answer is really “I don’t know.”

The former “Friends” star’s guest run will begin on March 25.

Perry’s character, Mike, is “tasked with heading up a blue-ribbon panel that’s investigating a suspicious police shooting.” Series star Julianna Margulies’ character, Alicia, “begins to question the actions he is taking as the chairman” after being assigned to the panel.

Perry’s most recent regular TV gigs were the short-lived ABC sitcom “Mr. Sunshine,” which ran from February to April 2011, and the Aaron Sorkin-penned “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” which ran from September 2006 to June 2007.

Matthew Perry, Dean Cain, Kristy Swanson and Dominique Swain have joined Kevin Sorbo, Stelio Savante and Jeffrey Vincent Parise in the romantic comedy based on Deb Norton’s play. Perry and Cain will appear in cameo roles in the project which begins shooting late this month in Los Angeles. The Whole Banana revolves around struggling artist Fran (Swanson) who is unhappy with the men in her life. For help, she prays to Greek god Hermes (Sorbo). Enraptured by her appeal, Hermes enters Fran’s life and sweeps her off her feet. However, Hermes can only stay on earth for two weeks. Swain plays Swanson’s best friend and confidant and Savante portrays Swain’s long suffering husband. The indie comedy is from Magik Shoppe Pictures, and Stephen Wallis (Rain From Stars) will direct and produce. Also producing are John Bennett Perry, Stelio Savante and Tom Fox.

Swanson, the original Buffy The Vampire Slayer in the 1992 feature film, recently appeared in the indie What If. She is repped by David Shapira and Inphenate. Sorbo starred in last year’s biographical drama Soul Surfer and is repped by Innovative Artists and Marsh Entertainment. Swain, repped by Buchwald/Fortitude and Leverage is best known for roles in Lolita and Face Off. SAG nominee Savante recently appeared in the play 110 Stories and South African film A Million Colours. He is repped by Buchwald-Fortitude and Elevate Entertainment.

Andrea Martin, Martha Plimpton, Martin Short and Matthew Perry are among the stars who will take part in a benefit presentation of Celebrity Autobiography Feb. 21, 2012, at Cal State University San Bernardino.

Presented as a benefit for the Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital Foundation, Celebrity Autobiography will be offered at 5:30 PM and 8 PM. The Big Hearts For Little Hearts Desert Guild hosts the event.

Also scheduled to appear are Valerie Bertinelli, Craig Bierko, Florence Henderson, Lainie Kazan, Ryan Reynolds, and series creators Dayle Reyfel and Eugene Pack.

Actor Matthew Perry, best known for his role on the NBC sitcom “Friends,” told The Daily Caller that people “realize now is not the greatest time to be selling” homes, but “it’s a good time to be buying.” Perry, however, would not comment on the capital gains tax rate which affects his profit on the sale of his own properties.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Perry recently sold one of his real estate and purchased another property in Los Angeles for more than $8 million.  Perry has approximately $22.045 million worth of real estate on the market.

TheDC asked Perry for his opinion on the current capital gains tax rate of 15 percent. The Obama administration has proposed raising it to 20 percent.

“These questions have to be asked of people who know more than me about this,” said Perry.

Before the interview, Perry participated in a forum at the Capitol on Thursday called “Drug Courts: A Proven Budget Solution.”

“In order to fund these drug courts, it costs $68 million to be able to properly fund, to be able to take care of the 1.2 million people who need drug courts — that’s what we’re here for — to ask for that,” Perry told TheDC.

“It’s a great sort of no-brainer, because it’s bipartisan. Everybody likes this idea; nobody’s against it. I think the only people that are against drug courts are private prison owners,” he said. “Those are the only people that would fight this.”

Actor Matthew Perry has bought a newly built custom house in the Sunset Strip area for $8.65 million.

MR. SUNSHINE ACTOR AND EVERYONE’S FRIEND, MATTHEW PERRY SAYS ‘I’D RATHER BE ME NOW THAN ME AT 20’

“I’ve certainly had a lot of experiences in my life where I was much too self-centered,” Matthew Perry, 41, says in PARADE’s February 13 cover story. “I’d rather be me now than me at 20.”

The legions of fans who’ve missed the Friends star will be glad to know he’s back in prime time on ABC’s Mr. Sunshine, playing Ben Donovan, the 40-year-old general manager of a fictional San Diego arena and the personification of a mid-life crisis. Asked whether Ben and his Friends character, Chandler Bing, share traits, Perry says the likenesses are more between Ben and himself five years ago. “This show is going to be about the 9,000 mistakes Ben makes on the journey to becoming a real person who cares about other people.”

Perry has had some highly publicized battles with addiction, going to rehab in 1997 and 2001 for alcohol- and drug-abuse treatment. And one thing he has yet to make time for is marriage and a family. Will he finally settle down? Check out PARADE on Sunday to find out!
