Have our Friends been cursed?

FRIENDS stars Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer and Matthew Perry have reunited after their TV show ended six years ago, and Hollywood gossips are asking if they have been cursed. The Daily Mail reports that the stars no longer look as young and youthful as they used to be.

Fortunately for them, after a series of delays and haggling over money, plans are nearing completion to bring Friends back for a big-screen version could not come at a better time for LeBlanc and his co-stars.

Matthew Perry, who played uptight Chandler Bing, has also seen his career flounder.

Following the final series of the sitcom in 2004, which followed the messy private lives of a group of six New Yorkers, Canadian Perry has watched his once blue-chip stock in Tinseltown slump dramatically.
In 2006, he landed the lead role as a TV writer in the much-vaunted Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip. But it was dropped by U.S. network NBC after one series because of poor ratings and mixed reviews.

Perry’s attempts at a film career have been equally disappointing. He starred as a chronically depressed film writer in the quickly forgotten movie Numb, which was mauled by critics and flopped at the box office. It was a role that required precious little dramatic invention from 40-year-old Perry.
He has admitted to suffering from depression, and has said he locked himself away for days on end in his Hollywood Hills home to escape the pressure of fame. He has also fought a long battle with addictions to drink and prescription drugs.

His problems began ten years ago when he checked into a Minnesota clinic after he became addicted to the painkiller Vicodin, following a jet-ski accident. At his lowest ebb, he was drinking two pints of vodka a day and swallowing up to 30 tablets. At the same time, he was admitted to hospital with agonising pancreatitis – an inflammation often caused by drink and drugs abuse. Then Perry had to abandon filming the box office flop Serving Sara, in which he co-starred with Elizabeth Hurley, to check into rehab again.

His latest film role, in last year’s 17 Again, saw him playing second fiddle to High School Musical heart-throb Zac Efron.Meanwhile, Perry’s attempt to make a return to TV last year, as a foulmouthed afternoon radio talk show host in a sitcom called The End Of Steve, ended in disappointment when the series was scrapped after just one pilot episode. He will next appear on screen in the U.S. this year as a down-on-his-luck sports stadium manager in yet another sitcom, Mr Sunshine.

Matthew Perry on taking it easy

Q: You and Efron worked on each other’s mannerisms – what did you pick up of his?

A: Lucky for me, the bulk was him picking up mine. Some of his stuff, I wasn’t even able to do. Like basketball – I’m pretty good at sports, but basketball, I suck at. So there was a sequence where I had to play and look as good as him, and we played for a few hours and everybody just decided, “Let’s cut that part out.”

Q: Do you see your mannerisms in him?

A: Yeah, for sure. There’s a couple of things he does in the movie that I’m like, ‘Oh! That’s the way that I would do that.’ Somebody hits him and he goes, ‘O-ow,’ in the exact way I would do it. And he talks about my smile – I have, like, an upside-down smile. On the poster that’s all over L.A. right now, he’s doing that. It’s weird, it’s this Matthew Perry kind of smile. It’s surreal.

Q: Have you been making the movies you want to make, generally? Or are you struggling against “Friends”?

A: I think there’s a little bit of that; it’s the curse and the good stuff of being in a show that was so successful. I did get caught up in that, for the first couple of years. “I’m only going to show up in dramatic stuff. I’m not going to do anything that’s close.” I’ve sort of lightened up on that.

Q: What’s on your mind a lot lately, outside of work?

A: It’s funny, it’s the things explored in this movie. I was pretty worried all the time when I was younger. Like at 17, I was this serious kid. Now I’m 39, and I’m taking it easy more. I’m playing sports, I’m hiking, I’m hanging out with friends. Just not too concerned about things, at least anywhere near as much as I was then.

Q: What’s the last thing you saw that really inspired you?

A: I see everyday people who are just happy and living good lives. My best friend, he’s got two kids now and that’s very inspiring to me, just watching him be a dad. People who are happy and living their lives in a non-selfish way.

Q: I don’t want to pretend to know you, but everybody’s familiar to some extent with your struggles – it’s great to hear you talking that way.

A: Yeah, it’s been an interesting life so far. Life is much easier and happier for me now.

Q: And may I say, you look healthy, too.

A: Thanks, man. Feel free to write how great I look. “My God, he’s a handsome man!” That’s a good first sentence for you.

Buzzline Matthew Perry Interview

Matthew Perry took some time out to talk to Buzzine about being 17 again, taking advantage of all that life has to offer, and making a move back to TV.

Emmanuel Itier: Would you like to be 17 again?

Matthew Perry: Is that the first question? Would I like to be 17 again? No…however, if I could be 17 — like this guy in the movie — and know what I know now, then that would be nice. Then I could take advantage of it. But I wouldn’t to go back and be 17 and not know what I know now.

EI: Were you a cool 17-year-old?

MP: No, I was the coolest of the non-cool kids in school. There were the popular guys and then the dorky geeks, and I was probably the coolest of the dorky geeks.

EI: Why did you decide to do this movie?

MP: It’s funny — I read the script, but I didn’t know who Zac Efron was.

EI: How long ago did you read it?

MP: About a year-and-a-half ago. He was still a big deal; I just had no idea who he was. I didn’t know anything about High School Musical and I still haven’t seen it.

EI: You’re missing out.

MP: Yeah, I’ve got my whole afternoon planned. I am going to watch all three movies back-to-back. I read the script and I really liked it. I felt it was really moving. The part I got to play was a sort of dissatisfied 37-year-old guy who is miserable and then gets to go on this journey, and that was moving to me. Then I found out that Zac Efron was kind of a big deal.
